NewsMy Brightest Diamond Freely Cross-PollinatesNew York City label Family Records will be releasing Cross-Pollination: The Mixtape Vol. 1 for free, including an eclectic mix of breakthrough acts My Brightest Diamond and Kevin Devine as well as fellow New Yorkers the Undisputed Heavyweights and Wakey! Wakey!. The mix celebrates Cross-Pollination, a weekly concert series that began in May 2004 by two artists, Wes Verhoeve and Jay Mankind. Each week, two performers play stripped down intimate solo sets before collaborating with each other by the night's end. And in a not-so-surprising turn of events, that series is also without a cover charge. "We decided to release the mixtape for free because it's a way for us to give back to the audience who has supported us for the past 3 years, and also to hopefully reach new people looking for great independent music to discover," says Cross-Pollination co-creator Wes Verhoeve, who also is a member of the Undisputed Heavyweights. "We started Cross-Pollination because we felt the local music scene was so fragmented and thought the collaborative aspect of the series was our contribution to fostering more of a community feel. It's great to see how artists we've brought together sometimes end up forming bands, or going on tour together." All the artists included in the compilation have played Cross-Pollination sets in the past, which are held Tuesday nights at Pianos in New York City. Upcoming performances include the Antlers and Svoy. Future mixtapes are planned for release, however no definite dates have been set. For now, Volume 1 can be downloaded (yes, for free) at www.liberatedmatter.com/mixtape.html Tracklist For Cross-Pollination: The Mixtape Vol. 1: 01. My Brightest Diamond - Hi, Remember Me? * 02.
